Building Trust Through Songs

205 Collishaw Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron cadets had the privilege of welcoming Patrick Aleck, an honourable member of the Stz’uminus First Nation and Penelakut Island. This visit came in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and it was an experience that touched the hearts of everyone. Patrick graciously joined the cadets to share his voice, music, stories, and teachings about the importance of acknowledging and understanding the truth of our shared history.

Patrick spoke from the heart about the significance of Truth and Reconciliation Day, a day that honors the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. He shared stories that shed light on the legacy of these schools, emphasizing the importance of listening, learning, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous peoples as we move toward healing and reconciliation.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening came when Patrick invited the cadets to sing and drum with him.  He shared the “Equality Song,” a song he wrote to spread the message that no matter who we are or where we come from, we can all come together to share experiences as equals. Their voices and drums united in harmony.  It was more than just singing and drumming; it was a beautiful moment of connection and respect that many of the cadets will cherish for a long time. Sgt. Matheson found it interesting to hear his story and how the songs he wrote are sung at many events. “The drum and singing were powerful. It really brought everyone together and was emotional,” Captain Ruel reflects.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Patrick Aleck and the Coast Salish People from Snuneymuxw and Szt’uminus Nations for opening their hearts and sharing such meaningful stories and songs! The evening was a beautiful blend of reflection and education, enriching everyone present in ways that were difficult to put into words.
As cadets move forward in honoring Truth and Reconciliation Day, they are reminded to hold these teachings close to their hearts and continue their journey towards understanding and friendship.
