At 205 Collishaw, an inspiring initiative is transforming the environment for cadets: the Shout Out program. This program encourages cadets to take pride in their actions and fosters a culture of positivity that is truly infectious. The positive attitudes displayed by the cadets have a ripple effect, inspiring even more positive behaviours.
Shout Out focuses on recognizing and celebrating positive behaviours among cadets. CI Bereck, the initiator of the Shout Out program, recognized that correction and disapproval could often dampen spirits. “In the squadron, there’s a lot of correction… So, it can be discouraging. Instead of focusing on what is wrong, the Shout Out program highlights what they do right. It is all about recognition, no matter how small they may seem,” she commented.
Shout Out program invites everyone- from cadets to officers- to recognize the ‘good behaviours’ they observe. CI Bereck passionately advocates for this shift, stating “When you are doing something good, it’s often overlooked, but when you are doing something bad, you are usually called out.” By encouraging cadets to highlight their peers’ positive actions, the program nurtures a culture of appreciation that empowers everyone to strive for their best.
FSgt Bereck tries to fill out the form as much as possible. “The pride among cadets when they are acknowledged during CO’s parade is significant. There’s something powerful about standing in front of your peers. Being recognized for your efforts in front of the whole squadron is rewarding, but more than that, it inspires others to join in the positive change,” she shares her thoughts.
The process is simple. Anyone who recognizes good behaviour can approach CVs, CIs, and officers to get a Shout Out slip and fill it out. CI Bereck points out that it’s part of the leadership and urges the seniors to watch for positive behaviour and acknowledge it.
The Shout Out program is a powerful reminder that recognizing good behaviour can lead to lasting change. As cadets continue to uplift and motivate each other, a strong and supportive community develops, where effort is acknowledged, and positive action is celebrated.
